Methods School 2025
STRN regularly organizes Methods schools designed for PhDs and other early career researchers. The Methods school focuses not just on how to conduct research using different methods, but also the ontological foundations of methodologies.

The next STRN Methods School will be hosted at the Austrian Institute of Technology, Vienna by Klaus Kubeczko and Jonathan Köhler in Autumn 2025.

Cost: The Methods School is free of charge. Participants are responsible for arranging travel and stay. There is a small travel bursary available (see below for how to apply).
Confirmed speakers include: Jonathan Köhler, Flor Alkemade, Klaus Kubeczko and Julia Wittmayer in
addition to a range of modelling experts from AIT.
Who should participate?
- PhD students; ideally in 2nd year
- Knowledge requirements: basic understanding of Socio-technical Transition and Technological Innovation Systems
- Research Interest in analysing Socio-technical Transition, Transition Pathways development, Transformative (Innovation) Policy
- Motivation:
- strong interest in qualitative and quantitative modelling,
- dynamic modelling and simulation,
- empirical and conceptual analysis of transitions / transformations
- Research methods used in PhD can include: [adapt when program and lecturers fixed)
- system dynamic modelling, ABM, evolutionary modelling and system change etc.
- mixed-methods, multi-paradigmatic modelling
- Transdisciplinary processes: Foresight and other participatory stakeholder engagement processes
- Experiments: living labs, role playing etc.
